Spatzenkino

Various Cinemas in Berlin and Brandenburg

Spatzenkino is a cinema for first-time cinemagoers. We want the first visit to the cinema to be a positive experience for young viewers, bringing joy and thus laying the foundation for a long, intense relationship with the cinema as a cultural venue. For this reason, Spatzenkino has specifically targeted 4- to 7-year-olds.We present our short film programs once a month in approximately 20 Berlin cinemas, which are spread throughout the city and easily accessible. Since January 2007, the Spatzenkino has also been available in the state of Brandenburg, where it now plays in 13 cities. The Spatzenkino screenings take place on weekday mornings and last approximately 45 minutes. Each film program has a central theme and consists of approximately two or three short films. These are usually animated or puppet-based films. However, we also show documentaries and live-action films.Spatzenkino is (to our knowledge) the only children's cinema initiative in Europe that caters specifically to the youngest moviegoers throughout the year. Spatzenkino has existed since 1990 and has been a project of JugendKulturService gGmbH since 2000. Every year, Spatzenkino welcomes approximately 50,000 children and accompanying adults to its cinemas. In 2004, the Spatzenkino received the DEFA Foundation's program award for its short film programs and media education concept for preschool children.
